Ortona
Ortona, a proud city of culture and the sea, home to eclectic artists known in Italy and abroad, is also one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Chieti coast.
The Ortona coastline, about 20 km long, after an initial stretch to the north with a wide, sandy beach, changes physiognomy and is an uninterrupted succession of inlets, bays, small beaches, cliffs and promontories overlooking the sea with a rich Mediterranean-type vegetation perfumed by broom.
The most beautiful places are Acquabella and Ripari di Giobbe. Here begins the picturesque and distinctive 'costa dei trabocchi' characterised by the presence of the famous and celebrated trabocchi.
The town stands on a hill and from its splendid 'Passeggiata Orientale' you can enjoy a wide panorama.
The municipality has ancient origins, it had a remarkable development under the Frentani, mainly due to the presence of the port, which has always been the most important in Abruzzo. Known during the Roman period, it had its moment of decadence in the Middle Ages, only to rise again under the rule of the Swabians.
In World War II, it was the scene of bloody battles and the town was almost destroyed by bombing.
It retains a remarkable artistic heritage from its past.
It is well worth a visit:
- the Farnese Palace
- the Aragonese Castle
- the Churches of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Holy Trinity
- the Cathedral dedicated to St Thomas, which has been the jealous custodian of the earthly remains of the Apostle for over seven centuries
- the charming historic centre

- the Battle Museum.
There are numerous traditional events such as the 'Vaporetto' of St. Sebastian (20 January) and the patron saint festivities of St. Thomas, which take place on the first weekend in May, including the historical re-enactment of the 'Procession of the Silver Keys'.
There are endless possibilities for excursions to get to know Abruzzo, from visiting the nearby Crecchio Castle to visiting cities of art such as Chieti, Lanciano and Vasto, or the characteristic villages of Guardiagrele and Rocca San Giovanni, or visiting the many local wineries producing excellent wines.
