Barrea
Barrea is a small village in Abruzzo, perched on a rocky mountain spur. An important tourist resort, it belongs to the Alto Sangro Mountain Community and the Altopiano delle Cinque Miglia and is one of the main centres of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
Mountainous landscapes, expanses of beech forests and crystal-clear watercourses characterise the village of Barrea. The highest peak, Mount Greco, reaches an altitude of 2249 metres.
An ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts, a dense network of trails starts from its centre, leading to the area's main attractions, including Lake Vivo, Lake Pantaniello, Lake Barrea, and the Resuni refuge.
The historical centre is very suggestive and still preserves intact the traces of an ancient past when it was used as a fortification for defensive purposes.
