Salinello Gorge Nature Reserve
Abruzzo proves to be a 'sui generis' region due to the rich presence of diverse natural landscapes located on the coast, in the hills and in the mountains. Thanks to this characteristic, it is easy for nature lovers to reach, during their relaxing seaside holidays, the suggestive places located towards the interior of the region.
For example, for those planning to spend their holidays on the Teramo coast, the Salinello Gorges represent an opportunity to spend a day immersed in nature, witnessing a natural spectacle of rare beauty.
These deep canyons, located between the Gemelli Mountains and created by the flow of the Salinello river, offer suggestive views and fascinating itineraries for excursions.
The canyon features streams, waterfalls, small lakes and springs, as well as numerous suggestive caves of karstic origin and millenary formation, often historical testimonies of hermit life. Definitely worth highlighting is the Hermitage of S. Angelo in Volturino, one of the most important hermitages of the Salinello. In this large and ancient 'monastery cave', of prehistoric origin, the remains of frescoes, flooring and painted plaster are still visible.
The Grotta Sant'Angelo, known as the Hermitage of St. Michael, the Hermitage of St. Mark and the Hermitage of St. Mary Scalena, to name but a few, are also very beautiful. Also spectacular is 'Lu Caccheme', a 35-metre high impetuous waterfall located at the beginning of the Gorge.
The itineraries and excursions that can be undertaken in this area are numerous and divided according to level of difficulty. Both experienced hikers, looking for challenging and special routes, and those who simply want to spend a day in contact with nature by taking a splendid walk, will therefore have the opportunity to observe some of the most fascinating spots in the Reserve.
The Salinello Gorge is therefore an opportunity to visit places steeped in history and admire the spectacle offered by nature, which is uncontaminated here. Nearby there are also villages and towns, such as Civitella del Tronto, rich in tradition and history, where one can perhaps crown one's perfect day by discovering the peculiarities of traditional Abruzzo cuisine.
