Lake Scanno: between magic, history and knights
Lake Scanno was formed in prehistoric times when a huge landslide broke off from Mount Genziana, blocking the Sagittario valley. The place from where the landslide fell is now called Frattura and seen from that point the lake appears heart-shaped, a peculiarity that has contributed to making it famous.
About the origin of the lake, there has been a blossoming of legends along the lines of 15th-century poems: there are tales of knights, Saracen kings and a sorceress, Madama Angelina, who with a spell made the lake rise to defend herself from enemies.
Legends aside, Lake Scanno has its own particular beauty due to its position in the valley surrounded by dense woods and the rocky slopes of the mountains that descend steeply in a rugged and wild scenery that is undoubtedly fascinating. The sky is furrowed by the flight of eagles and peregrine falcons while mallards and wild ducks glide over the lake.
Strolling along the shores you come across the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Lago, a small square church with three walls plastered and decorated with frescoes and the fourth in rock where the altar rests.
Not far from the lake is Scanno, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the region, with its houses, palaces and stairways, also famous for its goldsmithing and lace-making.
