Discover one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: Civitella del Tronto
Civitella del Tronto attracts numerous visitors throughout the year, thanks to the considerable historical importance expressed by the present Fortress and the beauty that characterises the surrounding area.
The emblem of this village is the Bourbon Fortress that stands imposingly at the highest part of the town. Of considerable importance to the Kingdom of Naples during the Risorgimento struggles for the unification of Italy, this building, probably of medieval origin, was transformed in the 16th century by Philip II of Habsburg, and then in the 18th century under the rule of the Bourbons, who made a number of changes to it.
The important structure, which can be ranked among the largest works of military engineering in Europe, covers an area of 25,000 square metres and today houses the Weapons Museum, where ancient maps and weapons related to the historical events of the area can be viewed.
The Fortress, which can be visited in its entirety, offers tourists and enthusiasts a unique experience: walking through the fortress among the squares of arms, barracks and walls steeped in history means immersing oneself in the atmospheres of times gone by until reaching the highest points of the building from which one can admire the marvellous natural scenery offered by the hills of Abruzzo and Marche.
Civitella, included in the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' circuit, also presents many peculiarities from a cultural and natural point of view.
The entire town has 'mysterious' streets, including 'Ruetta', the narrowest street in Italy, and numerous monuments, including the Church of San Lorenzo, dating back to the 16th century, the Romanesque Church of San Francesco and, not far from the town, the Hermitage of San Michele Arcangelo, located in the Salinello Gorge Nature Reserve, where nature lovers and hikers will have the opportunity to walk itineraries of particular geological and natural interest.
Therefore, do not miss the opportunity to visit Civitella del Tronto, one of the most beautiful villages in the region, where walking through the streets of the historic centre up to the famous fortress, you can also take the opportunity to taste traditional dishes such as ceppe, handmade pasta, a symbol of the town's culinary tradition.
