Riding through the mountains, the horse trail on the Gran Sasso a unique experience to share

The horse trail traces a large ring around the Gran Sasso with branches on minor itineraries, creating a route that winds through pastures, woods, villages and towns. Conceived for horse trekking, the bridle path can obviously also be travelled on foot or by mountain bike and allows visitors to get to know the extraordinary environmental, but also historical and cultural heritage of this territory so rich in reasons for interest.

The bridle path retraces the ancient mule tracks and paths used for centuries by farmers to reach their fields at high altitude or by merchants to move between the villages on the various slopes of the massif.

The project was developed in total harmony with the environment and the application of naturalistic engineering methods made it possible to use traditional materials and techniques to reconstruct the dry walls and palisades. In addition, the drinking troughs and fountains were restored, and rest areas, shelters and sheds for the horses were set up.

Careful signposting indicates places of natural or cultural interest together with refreshment and shelter points, agritourism farms and equestrian centres.

Travelling along the trails on the Teramo side in the silence of the mountains, one can admire the landscape of the northern side of the Gran Sasso with Castelli, Prati di Tivo, and the Monti della Laga moving eastwards. Continuing on, one enters the L'Aquila area through Lake Campotosto and the Chiarino valley.

From here on, the territory opens up to scenery dotted with villages, castles and abbeys. It is the region's great historical and cultural heritage that meets us along the way: Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castel del Monte, Calascio with its splendid fortress, Capestrano, just to name the most famous.

In the province of Pescara you can admire the chamois in the Val d'Angri and taste the incomparable pecorino cheese of Farindola.
