Extra virgin olive oil

The Mediterranean culture of the olive tree finds in Abruzzo one of the most important production areas in Italy and has been shaping the landscape of entire territories between the sea and the mountains for centuries.

An ancient history, that of the region's olive-growing, witnessed by the recent recovery of a large olive tree, in the garden of the abbey of San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia (Ch), over 1,700 years old.

Abruzzo boasts more than 50,000 hectares of 'olive grove' area: together with vineyards, the most representative postcard of the hilly territory. In the province of Pescara, in the so-called 'golden triangle' of Loreto Aprutino, Pianella and Moscufo and in the Pescara Valley, is the Aprutino-Pescarese PDO, the first to be recognised in Europe in 1996.

In the province of Chieti, where about 65% of regional production is concentrated, there is instead the Colline Teatine PDO with the sub-zones Frentana and Vastese. The latest is the PDO Pretuziano Colline Teramane with its local varieties Tortiglione and Castiglionese, cultivated along the coastal hills and for about 25-30 km inland almost as far as the Gran Sasso.
