Alba Fucens: the archaeological jewel of Abruzzo
At the foot of Mount Velino, in the heart of Abruzzo, lie the interesting archaeological remains of Alba Fucens. A city of the Equi, predating Rome, it was initially very important due to its fortunate strategic position and became a rich and prosperous place during the Roman imperial age.
This is testified by the archaeological remains, which feature, for example, an imposing amphitheatre, in which musical and cultural events are nowadays organised, also thanks to the excellent acoustics present.
The site, which is always open, can be visited free of charge or with the help of expert guides. The ruins include the remains of the city theatre, the ancient market ruins, the baths, the sacellum of Hercules and the remains of an ancient Roman domus.
Known since antiquity as the 'balcony of Marsica', due to its position that allows one to admire the suggestive surrounding landscapes, this town is also located close to Avezzano, a flourishing town and landmark of the area, and is an excellent starting point for mountain excursions.
